Triphala actually means three fruits and it is an Ayurvedic herbal formulation coming from the Indian subcontinent.

Taste (Rasa): Sour, bitter, astringent. It may also taste, sometimes pungent and sweet.
Side effects: If you decide to take a night dose of Amla before going to bed, you might feel your teeth weaken in the same way that over-exposure to citrus fruits makes them feel.
Bibhitaki: Bahera or Belleric Myrobalan
The second ingredient in Triphala is very useful for hair, throat and eyes and the problems these may develop. Also, it is known to boost the immune system. It is known as ”One who keeps you away from disease”. Bibhitaki is a large deciduous tree found across India especially in lower hilly areas. In Sanskrit, it is known as Vibheetaki, which means both fear and lack of fear. The entire name actually means the fruit that takes away the fear of diseases. You may also find it under different names like Tanikaya, Taadi in Telegu, Todikai in Tamil, Baida in Bengali, Baheda in Guajarati and Malayalam and Bahera in Hindi and Tare Kayi in Kannada.

Side effects: Bibhitaki is NOT recommended during pregnancy and it may reduce the production of breast milk. It is also not recommended for people with a lean body, weak immunity.
Haritaki: Harad or Chebulic Myrobalan
It is commonly known as black myrobalan or chebulic myrobalan. The tree can be found in the sub-Himalayan tracks and the fruit is hard and yellowish in color. Haritaki is considered to be a sacred plant capable of eliminating all disease.
Nutritional values: It contains essential vitamins, minerals, and protein. It is a rich source of vitamin C and minerals like selenium, manganese, potassium, iron, and copper. The list does not stop here. It also contains gallic acid, palmitic acid, behenic acid and tannic acid.

How to use Haritaki?
Helping the balance in the stomach: mix Haritaki powder, black raisins, and sugar in equal ratio. Take 1 tablespoon twice a day. For healthy lungs and hiccups: take Haritaki powder and Shunti powder with hot water. To extract extra mucus from lungs: Haritaki powder with honey, twice a day.
